A New Deal for NHL Free Agent Ilya Kovalchuk?

Iyla Kovalchuk celebrating at the Devils bench

Written by: Larry “The Nucks IceMan” Johnson

Finally, is this saga going to come to an end? It was reported on ESPN.go.com that the NHL has received a new deal for the most coveted UFA this season, Ilya Kovalchuk.

With that, the league has a five day window in order to review it and either approve or reject it.

I would think that after all this hoop-la that the Devils will have structured it accordingly since they now understand the guidelines.

It has also been stating by Kovalchuk’s agent, Jay Grossman, that the KHL is still a possibility if a deal cannot be reached.

Kovalchuk’s Russian agent Yuri Nikolaev, has told Russian newspaper SovSport, that Ilya will be staying for the whole season if he signs with the KHL.

I’m sure the KHL would be celebrating a coup if that were to happen but that would be such a disappointment to the NHL’s fans.

Here’s a player in the prime of his life having scored 338 goals and 304 assists in 642 games.

I mean how much money is enough these days with these astronomical contracts?

Is Kovalchuk going to spend $70 – 100 million or whatever he gets, in his lifetime? These contracts have grown exponentially since the last CBA was signed.

How did the new CBA stop the previous problem except for the cap limit? But I digress.

So hopefully this deal will be approved, Kovalchuk will stay in the NHL and we can all get back to normality.

I’ve been wondering about something since the end of the season. Is there really an off-season to the NHL?

Seems to me there is always something in the news to write about? Hey, wouldn’t have it any other way.

Greatest sport in the world!
